The Principal Scientist will integrate corporate strategy with a broad range of biotechnology approaches for fermentation production of nutritional products by yeast, fungi, and bacteria.
You will link activities in fermentation and downstream recovery technologies with those in other functional disciplines, including strain engineering, data science, and analytical chemistry.
You'll manage a team of scientists in the Bioprocess Sciences Team, as well as interactions with other global DSM R&D, piloting, and manufacturing sites.
In addition to supporting internal projects, you are responsible for managing interactions with external partners and collaborators, both industrial and academic.

Responsibilities:
Direct fermentation and downstream processing projects by executing project plans and implementing stage-gates Provide thought leadership in design, analysis, and interpretation of Bioprocess research workstreams Mentor, train and develop a team of junior scientists Communicate with internal collaborators, 3rd parties and strategic partners Use corporate strategies and values as a framework to guide fermentation and DSP directives Ensure quality of research across a set of diverse and complex bio-industrial projects Promote a positive, safe and compliant work environment Work closely with the Lexington Strain Engineering Team to direct the development and implementation of fermentation strain screening protocols to identify improved production organisms Serve as a problem-solving consultant to internal and external project team members, including lab and manufacturing personnelYou bring:
Experience as a subject matter expert with track record of success in microbial biotechnology, microbial fermentation technology, metabolic engineering, and fermentation downstream recovery process development Previous experience with yeast, fungal, and bacterial fermentation Extensive experience with bench scale (1-5 L) microbial fermentation equipment and technology Previous industry and direct team leadership experience (Minimum 5 years of team leadership required) Experience working with inter-disciplinary teams and external collaborators Understanding of scale-up / scale-down of fermentation and downstream recovery operations Experience in generating intellectual property and making patentable discoveries Experience with data analysis and statistical software packages Excellent project management and organizational skills Broad microbial physiology expertise a strong plus Ph.
