Location: Lexington, MA
Duration: 12 months and 40hr/wk

Job Description:

Experienced weather analyst needed to contribute to several programs within the Air Traffic Control Systems Group to support FAA aviation weather research, development, and implementation programs. MS with 10
years relevant experience or BS with 20
years relevant experience.

Sample assignments include:

Weather surveillance and forecasting algorithms
Developing advanced weather surveillance and forecasting algorithms of relevance to current and future air traffic control needs (e.g., wind fields, pressure, temperature, etc.)
Architecting software and developing associated necessary documentation to allow operational prototypes of advanced weather surveillance and forecasting algorithms to be deployed in the operational air traffic control system
Analyzing performance of prototype weather surveillance and forecasting algorithms in the operational air traffic control system and refining the algorithms as appropriate

Weather impacts on future air traffic control concepts
Developing metrics of atmospheric characteristics of direct relevance to the assessment of current and future air traffic control concepts.
Analyzing weather feeds and archives to define the behavior of the atmosphere against the relevant metrics defined above.
Developing operationally realistic weather analysis scenarios for use in large-scale air transportation system simulations.
Interpreting the outputs of large-scale air transportation system simulations to characterize the impact of weather phenomena on the assessment of current and future air traffic control concepts.

Special Talents & Qualifications (Security Clearance Level, etc): - Required
Extensive experience of weather sensing and forecasting techniques (e.g., wind, convective weather, turbulence, etc.)
Ability to develop new weather sensing and forecasting algorithms to meet aviation needs. Proficiency with software tools required to develop advanced weather sensing and forecasting algorithms (e.g., MATLAB, Java, Python, Perl, C, C++, MySQL, etc.) for rapid prototyping and evaluation.
Proficiency with software tools required to simulate the impact of different weather conditions and products in large-scale air transportation system simulations

Desirable
A good understanding of air traffic operations in different flight domains, today and under the FAA?s Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen).
Experience working with FAA field facilities, systems and program management
System and algorithm documentation skills
Good written and oral communication skills
