Grp. 77 - Assoc Staff - Aero/Opto-Mech Engineer

Group 77 Rapid Prototyping
The Rapid Prototyping Group focuses on partnering with groups across the Laboratory to execute rapid prototyping efforts. The group works on diverse programs, delivering new advanced technology capabilities in timelines typically under a year. This group leads and coordinates various activities:
mechanical system design and fabrication, electronics system design and fabrication, system engineering, integration into aircraft and other platforms, and laboratory and field testing. Projects are conducted in a team environment, utilizing resources from both the Engineering Division and mission area groups to successfully execute fast-paced development and demonstration efforts.

The Rapid Prototyping Group seeks an Aero/Opto-Mechanical engineer with broad experience in the design, modelling and fabrication of components, enclosures, optical assemblies and aero-mechanical payloads. The individual must have an understanding of integration & testing, alignment & measurement, motors & bearings, environmental ruggedization, and general actuation, mounting, and packaging of system. The engineer must have some project management skills and be able to interact with a number of subject matter experts in a collaborative team to develop complex sensor systems on a variety of platforms.

This electrical engineer must have a blend of design and hands on build and test skills particularly in support of high energy laser systems. The engineer needs to interface many subsystems/devices together including large high current power supplies and switching circuits into working prototype systems. The engineer also must have C+
software development and FPGA programming skills to create the operational software to drive the power subsystems A primary emphasis remains on practical hands on skills rather than theoretical. The engineer will also work on a variety of short duration (6-18 month) projects supporting Group 77 programs to provide electronics and controls system designs followed by integration and checkout of those systems. The engineer must be hands on and enjoy building hardware. Writing and executing functional tests, and troubleshooting these hardware prototypes are required. This engineer will also focus on the design, development, programming and demonstrations of high power electronics for the high energy laser programs and other Group 77 efforts. The engineer will complete circuit designs with FPGA s and other components and build the embedded programming that will operate the power subsystem to the specifications required. Specific tasks will include; requirements development, circuit board design, oversee circuit layouts and fabrication, test program and debug the boards, and oversee their insertion into the chassis, and then the system.

Requirements:

MS degree in Electrical Engineering or related area. In lieu of an MS, will consider BS degree with 3 plus years related experience.

Demonstrated hands-on approach to design, build and test

Knowledge of various interfaces for large power supplies

Demonstrated approach to system integration, testing and troubleshooting.
