Linux Systems Engineer

Our Enterprise Technology and Tools (ETT) Team provides resources to assist with compliance execution, reporting, and vulnerability-remediation activities. These services are offered across the Laboratory through the ISD Embedded System Administrator (ESA) Group. In addition, the ETT Team is responsible for the overall operation of monitoring tools. Such tools include SolarWinds, the Laboratory s IT service management (ITSM) tool (Footprints), and the Laboratory s central visibility tool BigFix.

Job Description

The Information Services Department (ISD) supports Linux infrastructure across the Laboratory s unclassified network and two classified networks. A key focus in ISD s Linux strategy is ensuring, wherever possible, that we are consistent in our implementation and support of Linux across all of these environments. The Linux Systems Engineer will be critical to that objective. They will collaborate with their counterparts in ISD and in the research divisions to develop a strategy for ISD s Linux environment that will support and add value to the work done at the Laboratory. More tactically, they will ensure we are implementing the best tools and developing the necessary processes to maintain and improve ISD s Linux environment.

The Linux Systems Engineer will demonstrate strong hands-on knowledge of Linux operating systems including both workstation and server varieties while supporting the Laboratory s enterprise classified computing infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have a solid background with managing Linux system configurations to include the underlying operating system (OS) and support services, system lifecycle and applying STIGs (full and benchmark). The successful candidate will understand how to use DISA s SCC Tool and STIG Viewer and how to evaluate systems for continued STIG compliance. Examples of systems and support services that the candidate will be proficient with include but are not limited to file sharing (cross platform e.g., NFS, CIFS), Satellite, Ansible, disk encryption (as it relates to STIG compliance), configuration management and authentication via Active Directory.

The successful candidate will show demonstrated hands-on experience with automation and scripting to support integrated architectures and demonstrated experience utilizing Ansible and Satellite to maintain the security and compliance of Linux systems. The ideal candidate will participate and/or take the lead on projects that mature and enhance the Laboratory s Linux and DevOps environments.

Due to the classified nature of the work this position will be involved in this is a 100% onsite position.

Primary Duties

Primary Duties

  • Serve as the Linux subject matter expert in collateral processing for the CES team
  • Develop, implement and support strategies to automate patching and maintain compliance within the Linux environment
  • Partner, across functional areas to develop, implement and support a strategy for DevSecOps.
  • Support and maintain the Linux desktop and server infrastructure working with Service and Team Leads to develop both functional and derive enhancement roadmaps
  • Assist with developing and maintaining STIG compliant Linux desktop and server images.
  • Deploy new Linux Desktops and Servers as needed.
  • Participate in projects as needed where Linux administration is required.
  • Provide 1st tier technical support as needed in support of the Laboratory community. This would include taking shifts in the classified hubs to provide assistance with password resets and other end user issues as well as working tickets and assisting users as needed.

This position is under general supervision of the Classified Enterprise Services Team Lead

This position does not have direct financial responsibility. However technical expertise may be required for assisting with product selection and annual product support renewals.

This position will maintain frequent contact within the department and Laboratory user community to maintain communications related to problem resolution, systems upgrades and services.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

Required:

  • Bachelor of Computer Science or relevant technical field of study
  • Experience supporting RHEL 7/8 workstation and server
  • Experience utilizing Ansible to support Linux systems
  • Experience supporting software deployment on Linux
  • Experience utilizing Satellite to support Linux systems
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with automation and scripting to support Linux based and integrated architectures
  • Ability to work independently toward delivery of goals as well as collaborate in team efforts
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong overall network skills (e.g. routing, switching and TCP/IP protocol)
  • Demonstrate the ability to learn new technologies and disciplines quickly
  • At least a secret level security clearance and the ability to obtain a top secret within 6 months employment
  • Security
    certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment

Preferred

  • Top secret clearance
  • Experience supporting NetApp storage systems

Occasional off-hour/on-call support is necessary. A certain degree of flexibility of schedule is required as some work (planned/unplanned) must be done outside of major production hours during pre-scheduled maintenance windows.

This position requires an individual with excellent communication (both oral and written) and organizational skills. The individual must be able to work in a fast-paced environment at times with minimal supervision and execute operations, project and administrative tasks with a high degree of quality, while following existing processes and establishing new operational procedures and best practices where necessary. Additionally, the position requires the ability to work with members of other teams and staff to accomplish department and organizational goals.
