Specialist - Materials Growth and Characterization

The Advanced Materials and Microsystems Group is a multidisciplinary group that combines chemistry, nanofabrication, micro-assembly, and simulations to develop new microsystem technologies for applications in larger systems. Examples of current or recent past work include the development and testing of chemical sensors for trace explosives and toxic chemical detection (both point and standoff), development of nanoplasmonic- and metamaterials-based devices with new functionalities in the visible and infrared, applications of microfluidics in biology, micro-optics, and heat management, and the development of devices and subsystems on both the microscale and nanoscale that combine chemistry with newly engineered materials.

The group s wide range of expertise includes capabilities in organic synthesis, mass spectrometry, and materials science, and its work is enabled by access to state-of-the-art facilities, such as the advanced synthesis, mass spectrometry, and surface science laboratories and the class-10 Microelectronics Laboratory.

Job Description

Job Description
We are seeking a person to support several development programs involving the growth of silica glass fibers by Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) and III-N semiconductors by Metallorganic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE). The position requires working closely with a team of scientists and engineers to grow silica fiber preforms for drawing into fibers for laser and amplifiers. The MOVPE process involves the growth of thin films of materials for advanced electronic and optoelectronic devices. Characterization of these materials will need to be performed or coordinated with internal and external entities. Maintenance and tool status tracking as well as spare parts and supply inventory tracking would be required. The individual will fill a key role in the team responsible for materials development, process development, and quality control, and will perform the work under the guidance of a PhD-level materials scientist. In addition, the individual may assist the team in the design, construction, and operation of program-specific experimental apparatus for specialized deposition and characterization, and assist in materials characterization such as photoluminescence, Hall Effect measurements, and microscopy.

Qualifications
A BS in materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related field is required, with hands-on experience operating chemical vapor deposition systems strongly preferred. Experience with silica glass hot-work is a plus, but not required. Some familiarity with materials characterization methods, such as optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and photoluminescence, is desirable. The successful candidate will have the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment, and have strong oral and written communication skills.
